How do pigeons communicate?

Pigeons, like many other birds, use vocalizations to talk to one another. Their sounds consist primarily of coos and gurgles, but research suggests these birds are far more complex than originally thought. While body language also plays an important role in pigeon communication, it seems that pigeons are able to link their vocalizations together to form phrases. This ability to communicate in such a fashion is very reminiscent of how humans speak to one another using sentences. The details of pigeon communication are still shrouded in mystery, but these birds have been proven to be highly intelligent. Not only can pigeons recognize all 26 letters of the human alphabet, they can recognize individual people even in photographs. It is very possible pigeon communication is far more complicated than originally thought.
